World Bicycle Relief

August 28, 2013

World Bicycle Relief is a nonprofit organization transforming individuals and their communities through The Power of Bicycles.

Pactimo is especially proud to be a clothing partner for this amazing organization.

Founded in 2005 by F.K. Day and Leah Missbach Day in response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami, World Bicycle Relief partnered with aid organizations on the ground in Sri Lanka to distribute over 24,000 bicycles to aid the rebuilding of lives. They did this by providing access to education and healthcare and reconnecting workers to their livelihood.

After the success of this disaster relief program in Sri Lanka, World Bicycle Relief was approached by aid organizations working in Sub-Saharan Africa to assist with volunteer healthcare programs in Zambia where 40% of the population was suffering the effects of HIV/AIDS. In partnership with local aid groups, World Bicycle Relief worked to provide specially designed, locally assembled, rugged bicycles to healthcare workers treating HIV/AIDS patients. Field mechanics were also trained to build, maintain and repair the bicycles.

Today, World Bicycle Relief is working across transforming individuals and their communities through The Power of Bicycles. World Bicycle Relief Buffalo Bicycles are granted through work-to-own or study-to-own programs or purchased by non government organiztions, corporations or individuals in need of reliable transportation in order to reach clean water, education, healthcare, markets and jobs. To date, World Bicycle Relief has provided over 120,000 bicycles and trained over 200 field mechanics.

Compared to walking, bicycles represent an enormous leap in productivity and access to healthcare, education and economic opportunities. The simple, sustainable nature of bicycles empowers individuals, their families and their communities.

"Along with their custom and off the rack clothing for the warmer months, Pactimo has been helping cyclists warm as well. Pactimo’s Alpine Thermal RT jersey remains one of my favorite cold weather pieces, but this time Pactimo sent along a couple jackets that sit on either side of the Alpine in terms of warmth and weather protection."

As a rider, I’m picky [my friends say tweaky] about my kit. If we dress sharp, we feel good…If we feel good, we go well. The proper cycling shoe color is white, because it’s Euro, and because the European continent is the Mothership of all cycling. Life is way too short to bother with bargain kit. Did that sound tweaky?
