Rob Jones’ Inspirational Ride Across America

Rob Jones Ride Across America

Tuesday’s installment of TODAY’s series, “Hope to It,” spotlights Marine Rob Jones, who had both legs amputated after an IED explosion. He had special legs made for him to peddle a bike so he could go on a cross-country ride and raise money for charities that gave him tools to go on living.

During Rob’s recovery at Walter Reed, he became determined to relearn how to ride an upright bicycle. Despite many difficulties and through the help of Ray Clark from Ride to Recovery, Rob managed to get Rob up and cycling in only six months. He was later able to participate in the Nation’s Triathlon in Washington, DC in September of 2011. It was during this time of rediscovery that he came up with the idea of cycling across America in order to benefit some of the charities that had aided him during during his recovery.

Organizations Rob is Riding to Support

Ride 2 Recovery
Ride 2 Recovery is produced by the Fitness Challenge Foundation, a non profit organization designed to benefit mental and physical rehabilitation programs for wounded service members via the sport of cycling, whether it be on an upright cycle, a recumbent, or a hand cycle. The Ride 2 Recovery program raises money to support spinning recovery labs, and outdoor cycling programs located at military and VA hospitals designed to keep wounded veterans active. Ray Clark, the representative for R2R at Walter Reed, was integral in my relearning how to ride an upright cycle. A cycle that was given to me by Ride 2 Recovery. Visit Ride 2 Recovery’s Website

The Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes
The Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes(CSAH) is a non profit organization that provides financial assistance to all injured service members and their families from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. They specialize in the direct giving of money to veterans, providing part time work for veterans and their caregivers, and providing online education and training. They host a yearly conference called the Road to Recovery; a four day event taking place in Orlando, Florida designed to motivate and educate injured service members and their families in order to prepare them for the challenges they will be facing in the future as a result of their injury. The conference provides information regarding career counseling, housing, VA benefits, healthcare, and personal development. Visit the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes Website

Pactimo Supports Veterans

“While Pactimo has supported a variety of non-profit programs for over a decade,” said Tony Kelsey, Director of Marketing at Pactimo, “it is always especially satisfying to support organizations like Ride 2 Recovery.  As a Marine Corps combat veteran myself, I can’t even begin to express how honored we are as a company to support and help our country’s veterans with the challenges they face post-combat.”

Pactimo has been selected as the official custom cycling clothing sponsor for Ride 2 Recovery.

I tested out the new Women’s Apex kit recently, and was pretty impressed. The Apex Jersey is super lightweight and breathable. The back and sleeves are made of a mesh-like fabric that offers great air flow on hot days and wicks moisture really well, even while wearing a hydration pack.
