Tuesday’s installment of TODAY’s series, “Hope to It,” spotlights Marine Rob Jones, who had both legs amputated after an IED explosion. He had special legs made for him to peddle a bike so he could go on a cross-country ride and raise money for charities that gave him tools to go on living.
During Rob’s recovery at Walter Reed, he became determined to relearn how to ride an upright bicycle. Despite many difficulties and through the help of Ray Clark from Ride to Recovery, Rob managed to get Rob up and cycling in only six months. He was later able to participate in the Nation’s Triathlon in Washington, DC in September of 2011. It was during this time of rediscovery that he came up with the idea of cycling across America in order to benefit some of the charities that had aided him during during his recovery.
Organizations Rob is Riding to Support
Ride 2 Recovery
Ride 2 Recovery is produced by the Fitness Challenge Foundation, a non profit organization designed to benefit mental and physical rehabilitation programs for wounded service members via the sport of cycling, whether it be on an upright cycle, a recumbent, or a hand cycle. The Ride 2 Recovery program raises money to support spinning recovery labs, and outdoor cycling programs located at military and VA hospitals designed to keep wounded veterans active. Ray Clark, the representative for R2R at Walter Reed, was integral in my relearning how to ride an upright cycle. A cycle that was given to me by Ride 2 Recovery. Visit Ride 2 Recovery’s Website
