Leif Kruse – Contributing Artist

August 01, 2014

“The desire to create is overwhelming…”

Leif Kruse’s has been experimenting with painting and drawing since early childhood. And while his work has evolved over the years, he says it will likely continue to do so indefinitely.

Leif’s father, Torsten Kruse, a classical, historic maritime painter, helped nurture Leif’s involvements in the arts from early on. He names his father as one of his biggest influencers, among Francis Bacon, Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Cezanne and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Recently, Leif sat down with Josh Cook, our Retail Brand Manager, for this mini-interview:

How did you first discover your love for art?

I’m not sure I’d say I really “discovered” art; it’s just something I’ve always done since as long as I can remember. My father is an artist, so it just sort of became something that we did. I will say, that after college I did have a different perspective and a slightly better understanding of what I wanted to do with it. I have a number of goals, and slowly but surely I’m working towards making them happen.

What is your favorite medium to work with?

For quite some time now, my favorite medium has been acrylic and charcoal on canvas. Acrylic dries quickly enough and allows me to draw and work with charcoal between layers of paint.

Where do you derive your inspiration from? What is your most unusual source of inspiration?

Inspiration comes in so many forms. There are things everyday that bring up thoughts of creating something new. Having a day job certainly gets in the way of the creative process, so it takes a few days to get in the right mindset. My ideas change so often, that I’m not sure any of my inspirations could really be considered unusual. Being inspired can come out of nowhere though, and sometimes the desire to create is overwhelming.

What artists have influenced your style/expression the most?

I really enjoy looking at other artist’s work, but I’ve always been careful to make sure what I create is my own and not really like anyone else’s. It doesn’t always sit well with the viewer though! Throughout the years, the work I’ve enjoyed the most has come from Francis Bacon, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. Recently, I’ve really enjoyed seeing work from a young artist named Charlie Isoe.

What is your favorite color right now?

Over time, my color preference does change, but, for a while now, I’ve really been drawn to various hues of Teal or Aquamarine.

Where do you show your work currently?

At the moment I’m not showing any work publicly. The long, busy summer days don’t leave much time for new work, and I usually prefer to have a new group of work to show if I do. Past work is always viewable on my website (www.leifkruse.com) and tumblr blog (leifkruse.tumblr.com)

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Leif Kruse attended Flagler College, a small liberal arts college with a renowned art program, and outside of art and his day job, road and mountain biking are his priorities. Just being outdoors in beautiful scenery around his home in Boulder, Colorado is enough to calm his mind and inspire ideas. He usually has many paintings going at the same time, and from time to time, he says, may even finish one!

I tested out the new Women’s Apex kit recently, and was pretty impressed. The Apex Jersey is super lightweight and breathable. The back and sleeves are made of a mesh-like fabric that offers great air flow on hot days and wicks moisture really well, even while wearing a hydration pack.
