Katherine Hall – Contributing Artist

June 17, 2014

Snoopy Club & Pantone® Warm Red

Based on the east coast of Australia, Katherine Hall, a contributing artist to the Pactimo Artist Series since 2012, is equal parts art director and surfer. She not only creates graphics and apparel for Australian surf brands Valla Surfboards and Sea Legged, but knows her way around a 9’4″ Donald Takayama ‘In The Pink’ nose-rider surfboard.

Recently, Katherine had the opportunity to speak with Josh Cook, Pactimo’s Retail Brand Manager:

How did you first discover your love for art?

I’ve always loved drawing and design, for as long as I can remember. When I was 8 years old my friends and I formed a Snoopy club where we basically just read ‘Peanuts’ and drew our own version of the comic strip. By age 9 I had decided I wanted to be a graphic designer… and the rest, they say, is history.

What is your favorite medium to work with?

For drawing, at the moment it’s brush and ink, but I’m also very fond of fineline pen. I’ve also been getting back to painting recently, using acrylic and gouache on plywood.

Where do you derive your inspiration from? What is your most unusual source of inspiration?

A lot of it is just a result of years of absorbing everything and anything—from the work of great designers through to watching the sun rise over the ocean when I’m out surfing. As for the most unusual source: If I’m completely honest I’d have to say it’s being in the bathroom… but that perhaps has more to do with being in a quiet place by myself than anything else!

What artists have influenced your style/expression the most?

At the moment I’m really into more geometric art, like the work of Josef Albers and fellow Aussie Esther Stewart. I also love typographic and signwriting/commercial art by people like Jeff Canham and Margaret Kilgallen, and the bold cut-out/collage work of Paul Rand and Henri Matisse.

What is your favorite color right now?

It was, is, and always will be Pantone® Warm Red.

If you could hang out with one person in history present or past, who would it be?

After thinking long and hard, I’d have to say my Grandad. I would have loved for him to have met my children.

Where do you show your work currently?

As I spend the majority of my time working as a graphic designer, my work appears all over the place. Some recent projects are on my company blog designandopinion.blogspot.com. My drawings can be found at drawn-lines.blogspot.com and in various other places around the interwebs (I’m always surprised at where they pop up!). And at the moment my paintings can be found all around my studio at home.

Who is your favorite contemporary artist?

My good friend Wendy Abel Campbell. Her work has a similar aesthetic to mine (at least that’s what I tell myself), only it’s much, much better! Her website is wendyabelcampbell.com

Pactimo Women’s Apex Jersey Review

November 18, 2016

I tested out the new Women’s Apex kit recently, and was pretty impressed. The Apex Jersey is super lightweight and breathable. The back and sleeves are made of a mesh-like fabric that offers great air flow on hot days and wicks moisture really well, even while wearing a hydration pack.

Pactimo Women’s Apex Shorts Review

The Apex MTB Shorts are new in the Pactimo lineup for 2016 and, as the company states, they are “designed with performance-driven minimalism in mind.” These shorts are meant to be comfortable, functional, and good-looking. I put them to the test this summer to see if they do indeed provide all these attributes.
