Debbie Clapper, a Denver-based artist, has been a contributing to the Pactimo Artist Series for over a year. Her visually stunning designs are specifically known for their original patterns, typographics and illustrations. She likes to challenge the viewer to go beyond the surface level and delve deeper into the piece, allowing the art to reflect their own life experiences.
Debbie works without aid of a ruler to create hand drawn, imperfect patterns which symbolize the importance of breaking out of the routine. Her main tools of choice are Micron pens and Sharpie markers. When working on a piece, Debbie allows for immediate results by letting the ideas flow from the brain, to the hand, to the paper with as little preparation in between as possible.
Recently, Debbie sat down with Josh Cook, our Retail Brand Manager, for this mini-interview:
How did you first discover your love for art?
I discovered my love of art a very young age. I can’t say there was a specific moment in time where I knew – it has always been there for as long as I can remember. I pretty much began drawing everyday at the age of 9.
What is your favorite medium to work with?
Micron pens on Bristol paper.
Where do you derive your inspiration from? What is your most unusual source of inspiration?
I’ve always loved M.C. Escher. Discovering graffiti at the age of 13 was a HUGE door opener for me, and graffiti continues to be a constant inspiration to me. Architecture and organic patterns are also great influences on my work. My most unusual source of inspiration? I guess the recesses of my subconscious? Ha, I don’t know, I don’t really have anything “unusual” that comes to mind.
What artists have influenced your style/expression the most?
M.C. Escher and graffiti art in general.
What is your favorite color right now?
If you could hang out with one person in history present or past, who would it be?
The apostle Paul.
Where do you show your work currently?
I was recently in a group printmaking show at Firehouse Art Gallery in Longmont. I have prints and original works for sale at the I Heart Denver store in Denver, CO and the Madelife store in Boulder, CO. That’s all I can remember at the moment.
Who is your favorite contemporary artist?
Ooh, this is a tough one. I have so many I love, but I gotta go with Kyle Hughes Odgers. He’s an artist in Perth and I am just absolutely in love with everything he creates.

Together with Water.org, we have helped empower smart women like Aisyah through access to safe water.
Aisyah is a wife, a mother, and a farmer. Most critical to all of her roles is time. Asiyah explained, “Time to work my rice fields means more money I can make for my family; our life is better.” As a smart business woman growing one of Indonesia’s most desired crops, Aisyah recognized lack of access to water at home as the main obstacle keeping her from having the time needed to farm.
