Review: Pactimo Summit Raptor Bib Shorts

One of the very best sets of shorts I’ve used over the last few years…

by Mike Anderson / Road Cycling UK

Pactimo are still a comparatively unknown name on this side of the Atlantic, but it’s time to sit up and take notice of the Colorado-based firm because they’re making kit that stands up against any of the traditional big names out there.

And that’s not just vacuous superlative, the Summit Raptor RFLX bib shorts are genuinely as good as any set of shorts I’ve worn in the last few years.

The chamois is from Cytech, whose list of pad clients includes some of the biggest names in the sport, and this one is their Endurance Anatomic 2 Carbon Flash. On the surface, that means about as much to me as it likely does to you, but in practice it’s wonderfully comfortable. It graduates from 60kg/m3 padding at the front to 120/mpadding under the sit bones at the back. It’s difficult to describe just how comfortable that 120/mpadding really is, but it’s absolutely no exaggeration to say that it’s the nearest to genuine all day comfort that I’ve ever used and to a certain extent can help to mask a less than ideal saddle – not a problem that most people have, as you’re better off changing it, but when testing bikes you can occasionally come across something that just doesn’t suit.

"The weekend before Big Frog I was covering an attack in a road race when I had an exercise-induced asthma attack (thanks, allergies).

One minute I'm doing my job, the next it felt like someone was squeezing my lungs and taking my breath away. I argued with myself on whether or not to get off my bike at the side of the road but settled on slowing down, recovering, and finishing the race (alone)."
