Mermaid Parade: Summit Raptor Review

Mermaid Parade: Summit Raptor Review

The Raptor fabric has a wonderful compressive but not restricting feel.

by Laura Callahan & Tyler Rae Dube / Pretty Damned Fast Magazine

When Pactimo first sent me the Summit RT Raptor bibs, I was immediately drawn to the scale like pattern of the fabric. I kept referring to them as my “Game of Thrones bibs” until Anna Maria brilliantly suggested that maybe they were less dragon and more mermaid. Paired with the Summit RT Jersey in “Ocean” and Tenspeed Hero’s Resort Striped socks, we decided to shoot the Summit Collection at Coney Island’s annual Mermaid Parade.

Mermaid Parade is the story of two mermaids who get legs for the day and explore the wonders of Coney Island by bike before returning to the sea.

One of the main themes of the Summit Collection is visibility. The rider who picks up the Summit Collection specifically rides and rides often. This means they have early low-light departures and late dusk returns. Both the Summit RT Speed jersey and Summit Raptor RT bibs feature silicone-impregnated, wide reflective arm band and rear waist gripper. Consisting of Pixel® fabric membrane, the reflective fabrics have refractive elements added directly into the cloth. In daylight the fabric appears like any other on the garment—but when illuminated by exposure from direct light, such as a car’s headlights, RT “explodes” with brightness.

Perhaps I’d set my sights a little high but I’d now targeted TCR as my first real venture into endurance racing. The rules are simple, the clock starts at 2200hr in Geraardsbergen, Belgium, and stops when you cross the finish line in Meteora, Greece, some 4,000km later having visited the four checkpoints.

"I finished 9,000 miles having to ride at night, in blizzard conditions and in some insane winter winds, but I succeeded and set the next goal to ride the trip of a lifetime; a 7 day bike adventure in Italy with my brother. Throughout it all I noticed I could not sustain the power I was used to easily producing, and began to get dropped on some group rides that I easily was able to handle before."

"Pactimo's Summit Stratos bib shorts were something of a revelation when we reviewed them last summer.'We'd happily pull these shorts from the kit drawer for just about any ride. They are supremely comfortable,' was our verdict."
