Andrew Hoffman – Contributing Artist

June 25, 2015

Rothko and Ed Ruscha Come to Mind

Contributing artist to the Pactimo Artist Series, Denver-based Andrew Hoffman (b. 1984) is an artist, designer, illustrator, and professor. He grew up in Bailey, CO and is a graduate of Western State College in Gunnison, CO (BFA ’07). He also studied at the Classical Art Academy in Boulder, CO.

Recently, Andrew had the opportunity to speak with Josh Cook, Pactimo’s Retail Brand Manager:

How did you first discover your love for art?

I could always draw well. In the first grade I drew the airplane from the cartoon Tailspin and I won some competition for it. Art has been a life endeavor for me.

What is your favorite medium to work with?

Oil and acrylic paint as well as Micron pens.

Where do you derive your inspiration from? What is your most unusual source of inspiration?

It sounds cliché but I get inspiration from everywhere – people, travel, outdoors, skateboarding, music etc. An unusual source of inspiration for me is boredom. When I’m bored my mind starts to wander and I experiment with new ideas or re-visit old ones. I’m also an avid outdoorsmen. Running, biking, snowboarding, hiking, camping etc. are all very meditative and therapeutic for me. Most of my greatest sources of inspirations have nothing to do with art or design.

What artists have influenced your style/expression the most?

That’s a tough question. Rothko and Ed Ruscha come to mind as being my art heroes, but I’m more influenced by subject matter or philosophical movements. Design, typography, modernism, minimalism, traditional sign painting, 60s counterculture and the beat generation are all subjects that I’m fascinated by.

What is your favorite color right now?

Haha. Depends on what paint I have available in my studio, also black and white will never get old for me.

Where do you show your work currently?

Mostly around Denver and Boulder. My next art endeavor is doing a live painting for a fundraiser event for BMoCA (Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art) at the end of April.
