Sea Otter quickly comes and goes each year with little time for reflection or much of anything. It’s one part bike racing, one part trade show and another part an opportunity to catch up with sponsors. It’s always chaotic but it is still the cycling event in the country and the chaos confirms that cycling is very much alive and well.
The women’s cross-country field was the most competitive I’ve seen in years. There were a handful of European pro’s including, Marianne Vos, Annika Langvad, Tereza Hurikova, Annie Last and more. It felt like a mini-world cup when 10 Olympians were called up to the line in short track. When my name was called, I rolled up and took a spot right behind Marianne Vos. She’s been a huge inspiration for me since she won her first Road World Championship at age 19. She is incredible in that she’s the best across multiple disciplines and remains competitive year-round. This year she’s trying her hand at mountain biking for a little extra challenge.
