The great British summer continues to shine on the great British Metaltek – Knights of Old racing team!
The weekend saw the team head to Abergavenny in Wales, the homeland of riders Dale Appleby. Rhys Lloyd and Gruff Lewis, for the grand prix weekend of racing.
Friday night saw the team continue to impress on the UK scene with four riders in the top 14 including Tom Murray finishing a fantastic 6th place which has moved him up the overall rankings to 5th.
Sunday saw the 5th round of the Premier Calendar head out from Abergavenny after a minute’s silence was observed for Ben Carroll who had tragically lost his life on the same road in a race earlier in the week.
The 140 rider field made up of the strongest teams of Rapha-Condor JLT, UK Youth, Node4 and Raleigh, faced its toughest test yet – 100mls in searing temperatures over the infamous Iron Mountain aka ‘The Tumble’. Not wishing to be intimidated by the UCI squads, a plan had been hatched to give the team the upper hand. Using the local knowledge of Rhys Lloyd and Dale Appleby, the tactic was to attack the race at 24mls over the tough ‘Rockfield’ section. The plan was executed to perfection which saw a ten man move go clear. All the major Teams were represented but more importantly there were three from the ‘Blue & Yellow Army’, Rhys, Dale and Kit Gilham!
This lead group rode to a 1’30” advantage by the Tumble at 45mls where the strong climbers from the main group would choose to make their moves. On the three mile climb a junction was made across to the leaders by the attackers from the peloton, and a ‘new’ 30 strong lead group descended into Abergavenny. There were numerous attacks from Team Raleigh and Node4 which split the group into many smaller ones and Rhys fought his way up hard to the 2nd group, eventually finishing an amazing 10th!!
Dale also clipped away in a move to finish 17th with Kit suffering and hanging on in the heat for 21st. Gruff Lewis and Rob Smail went to the fore in the main peloton for 31st and 35th.
Team Manager Andy Swain said, “We are delighted with how the Team are racing. We have now had results in every arena we’ve appeared in – from UCI Tour results abroad, great results in the CiCle Classic and Tour Series and now in the British Cycling Elite Circuit Series and Premier Calendar events.”
