Danny Van Haute – The Beast

August 21, 2013

Danny Van Haute is in his 8th year as the director of the Jelly Belly p/b Kenda cycling team.

In 1981, Danny was one of seven men on the inaugural and immensely popular 7-Eleven-Schwinn racing team. Eric Heiden, who would scoop gold medals in speed skating in the 1980 Winter Olympics, was the captain and the best known rider. The other Americans were Jeff Bradley, Greg Demgen, Bradley Davies, Tom Schuler, Roger Young, and…the man they call “The Beast,” Danny Van Haute.

When prompted about his nickname, Danny said, “There was a Belgium rider in 1905 named Carlton Ver Beste. His event on the track was motor pacing, where you ride behind a motor [vehicle]. One day he was going so fast, he ran into the motor and killed himself. In 1979, I was motor pacing behind my dad, and he forgot to tell me there was a pothole. I hit it and flew off my bike. I had to have 12 stitches in my head.”

A cycling friend, Eddy Van Guyse, who also lived in Chicago at the time, named him “Beast” in reference to Ver Beste.

Now a team director for 10 years, and heading up the Jelly Belly since 2005, “The Beast” is a veteran leader who uses his vast experience as a pro rider to create a cohesive unit that only gets better every year. His dedication to the team and the sport has made him a much-respected figure in cycling.
