On April 30, Fred Rodriguez was riding up his favorite climb in Northern California — Mt. Diablo, a serpentine 10-kilometer climb used during the Amgen Tour of California this year. He was rocketing up the mountain at one of his fastest clips ever.

With no team, Rodriguez was wondering if all his early-season fitness would be wasted.

The following week, Team Jelly Belly Team Director Danny Van Haute bet on the 39-year-old former Tour of Italy stage winner and signed Rodriguez. 

By the end of the month, Van Haute’s gamble would pay off handsomely as Rodriguez outsprinted a small group, which had been whittled down by the climb over Lookout Mountain outside Chattanooga, Tenn., to win the U.S.A. Cycling National Championships for road race.
